TOP FIVE | SKINCARE PRODUCTS

Skincare, skincare, skincare. Oh what a journey I have had with my skin..

I was actually very blessed growing up in regards to my skin, it has always been quite sensitive but also on the dry side, which didn’t bother me too much as it seemed to mean that it was not very prone to breakouts. However, because of that I was incredibly slack with my skincare routine (aka I didn’t have one at all) and I hardly ever removed my makeup properly before going to bed. Eventually, around my third year of university, those bad habits (along with a fair amount of stress) caught up with me and I was confronted with breakout mayhem. It was then that I decided I needed to adopt a proper skincare routine and so began the search..

I was (and still am) an avid fan of numerous YouTube beauty gurus so I thought who better to gain skincare advice from than them. I was lucky enough (and eternally greatful) to stumble across a pixiwoo video regarding an updated skincare routine – which led me to a video on their body talk daily channel with the honourable Caroline Hirons (I will link the video below). I think I probably blinked about twice during the video while I watched in awe as Caroline (or the skincare guru as I like to think of her) discussed her favourite skincare products and gave some amazing tips on how to treat your skin and why it should be treated that way. She put the importance of a good skincare routine into perspective for me and I’ve been hanging on her every word ever since.

I immediately searched the web for the products she recommended and purchased the ones that appealed to me most without a second thought – because as Queen Hirons simply, yet brilliantly put it – “you only get one face..so why mess with it?” Within a month of using my new skincare goodies religiously, my skin cleared up beautifully – and with a wee bit of chopping and changing, I have nearly perfected my skincare routine. Although I am still battling with dryness and the odd breakout, I can confidently say my skin is the best it has ever been. So without further ado, I will introduce you to my staple skincare products..

Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm

Did somebody say heaven in a tub? Yes you guessed it, I am absolutely head over heels in love with the Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm. I think I can safely say nobody enjoys having to take off their makeup at the end of the day – that is, until they are introduced to this amazing product. It takes off your makeup like a dream (including waterproof mascara), and makes for a great facial massage at the same time. Not to mention your skin feels like a baby’s bottom afterwards – and best of all? It is amazing for all skin types!

I cleanse with this balm every single evening, massaging it into my face and neck to really make sure I remove all the grime from my day, and then I remove it with a hot flannel in gentle circular motions.

Biologique Recherche Lotion P50

Next comes this bad boy which is classed as a balancing exfoliating toner and is a ‘must have’ step for anyone wanting to take their skincare routine seriously. It is specially designed to regulate sebum whilst balancing your skins PH levels and removing any dead skin that may be sitting on your face – in other words the uneven texture and annoying dry bits that your makeup tends to cling to. This means your skin is smooth and prepped for your next steps – not to mention, unlike exfoliating scrubs, P50 hinders breakouts instead of spreading them. Initially I was unable to get my hands on this so I was using the Clarins Gentle Exfoliating Toner but once it ran out I managed to track down some p50 and I’ve never looked back – in my opinion the p50 is a lot more effective and although Clarins have some lovely skincare products, their exfoliating toner just doesn’t compare.

I use my P50 after cleansing morning and night by applying several drops to a dry cotton pad and pressing it onto my face and neck – as the instructions clearly state to apply without rubbing.

La Roche Posay Serozinc

This step goes hand in hand with p50. This is because while p50 balances and removes dead skinSerozinc is an easy peasy spray toner that helps to put moisture into the skin and eliminate any bacteria. You see if you spray water all over your skin (think Evian face spray) it just dehydrates off the skin and makes it even drier (another Caroline tip), but something like Serozinc is just perfect and exactly what my dehydrated skin craves! I didn’t actually realise how much of a difference Serozinc was making to my skin until I accidentally missed it in my routine for a couple of days and the skin on my forehead began to get drier and drier until it was literally flaking off (I won’t be making that mistake again).

I spray this all over my face morning and night and let it soak in for a few minutes before moving onto my next step.

Kate Somerville Goat Milk Cream & Kate Somerville Nourish Daily Moisturiser

I know, I know putting two different things under one title is cheating but I have used them both for the same thing on separate occasions so I have to talk about them both! I originally bought the Kate Somerville Goat Milk Cream to use as my daily moisturiser underneath my makeup after reading rave reviews about it and all I can say is – it was A-MAZING for my skin. It was super hydrating and I felt as though it was almost nourishing and repairing my skin as I was wearing it (I hope that makes sense). The only issue I had with it was that it did leave quite a shiny finish which combined with the duey finish foundation I was wearing at the time (YSL Touche Eclat Foundation) was probably not the best look on me. However, I could tell my skin was reaping the benefits of the luscious cream so it was worth it.

When my Goat Milk Cream ran out, I quickly called the New Zealand stockist only to learn (and sob) that they were completely sold out and New Years was fast approaching so I needed a substitute. This lead me to Nourish, a lighter moisturiser by Kate Somerville. I was worried that it wouldn’t be hydrating enough for my dry skin, but the sales assistant convinced me otherwise and after feeling how soft it made the top of my hand when massaged in, I decided to give it a try. I must say it is a beautiful moisturiser and one I would recommend to someone with oily-normal skin, but for those with drier skin types, I think it’s slightly lacking that richness that our skin needs to avoid the dreaded dry patches.

I am currently using Kate Somerville Nourish Daily Moisturiser under my makeup until it runs out, then I think I may branch out and try a moisturiser from another brand – Origins has been catching my eye lately. Any recommendations?

Neal’s Yard Remedies Wild Rose Beauty Balm

Drum roll please.. This award-winning (miracle) balm can be used as a cleanser or a full on facial treat – I use it as a night cream and boy oh boy does my skin LOVE this stuff. Dry patches don’t stand a chance and you can say goodbye to any breakouts – when I wake up in the morning they have usually either completely disappeared or come to a head. And the scent.. well it smells like delicate roses – and not the synthetic kind – I’m talking about the “I’ve just been lying in a field of roses” (with no thorns of course) kind. And best of all, a little bit goes a very long way so you really get what you pay for – and then some.

  1. Hi there, your blog is great, just wondering, as a fellow NZer, where do you buy your 5 fav skincare products. I have recently found yhe amazing Caroline Hirons and her blog but cannot get hold of these products here.
    Many thanks, Alison

    • Hey Alison! I buy them online from websites that often offer free shipping to New Zealand! If you click on the titles of each product a link should come up that directs you to where you can buy each one 🙂 Let me know if you need anymore help! x

      • Hi again Rosaria,
Thanks so much for your reply, however I have had no success in obtaining the P50 lotion. The link is to their main website and cannot seem to order from there. Can you help?
        Thanks, Alison.

      • Hi Alison,

No worries! Oh yes I had the same problem and actually ended up grabbing mine off eBay, but its even difficult to find on there! I would suggest trying the Pixi Glow Tonic which Caroline also recommends and you can get from their website here http://www.pixibeauty.co.uk/glow-tonic – I just ordered some for myself as my p50 has nearly run out and it’s a lot easier to get your hands on!

        I hope this helps!

        Rosaria xx
